Resume Writing Process

Our resume writing process is designed to produce a targeted, well-optimized resume.
A well-optimized resume should:

  • Place your skills, experience, and other attributes in the best light possible
  • Rank high in job board search engines and employer applicant tracking systems
  • Pass 10-second gatekeeper screens
  • Be optimized for offline, in-person networking
  • Serve as an effective roadmap during interviews and telephone screens

Here’s an outline of our process:

Place your order online using our secure order form. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express via PayPal and Google Checkout.

After your order is verified, and you have confirmed your email address, send us four or five target job descriptions and a copy of your resume in Microsoft Word format. The job descriptions you provide will help us build a well-optimized, targeted resume.

After we receive your resume, we will review it thoroughly then email you a list of questions and talking points to help you prepare for the telephone consultation. We will schedule a telephone consultation at a convenient time. Daytime and evening appointments are available, Monday through Saturday.

During the telephone consultation, we will discuss your work experience, skills, achievements, career goals and salary targets. The consultation also serves as a practice interview during which we will discuss appropriate responses to difficult questions. All required phone consultations are included in our service; there’s no charge for additional consultations or email communications.

Within three to five days of completing the telephone consultation, we will send you draft versions of your new resume and cover letter for review and approval. We will make changes as needed until you are 100% satisfied.

After we receive your final approval, we will create Adobe Acrobat (PDF), ASCII text, and Microsoft Word versions of your resume and cover letter. You will receive two versions of the ASCII text resume and cover letter; one for pasting in online job forms, the other for pasting in emails. When pasting a resume or cover letter into an email or online form, properly formatted ASCII text works better than MS Word.

Make a Resume

Your resume is not just the list of your credentials and previous work experience-it also represents you. Choose a template that’s easy on the eyes, in a standard format, without using more than two fonts and two columns. Update your work experience, addresses and telephone numbers. Make sure that your grammar and spelling are correct. Do not include information prior to high school and do not try to make your resume longer than it is; those reviewing the resume will see right through it. Keep your resume concise, stressing your past accomplishments, and your potential employer will remember your name.

Evaluate Your Career Path

Potential employers prefer those who have a distinct career path over those who seem to have a chain of seemingly unrelated jobs. Sit down and have yourself evaluate your career path so far. What did you finish in school? What were your extra-curricular activities? What are the things you used to do on the side but never professionally? If you do have a seemingly erratic job history, you can try to find the common denominator in all the jobs you’ve had, and explain it during the interview. Knowing what you can do and what interests you will save you a lot of time in your job search.

Look at Job Listings

Look up job listings from your local newspapers, and on job listing websites online. Be more specific and try out different key words when narrowing down your job search. Social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn also provide opportunities for you to find jobs within your own social network.

When looking at job listings, learn how to read between the lines. Even if you do not fit a minor requirement, pass a resume. If you only fit the minimum requirements, pass the resume anyway. What is there to lose, right?

Update Your Skills

In this day and age of fast technology, it’s almost unacceptable for an applicant not to have the skills to even turn a computer on. Applicants with more experience in a field may find themselves passed over in favor of more tech-savvy individuals.

Choose Where to Follow Through

Sometimes, it happens that we don’t know much more about the opening we applied for until we are called for an interview. Take this as an opportunity to inquire about the job, at least the salary and the benefits, if they haven’t been mentioned in the job opening yet. Choosing the job interviews and the acceptable salary rates will work for you in the long run. It will also save you the trouble of having to go to an interview for a job that you’re not really interested in.

Give a Good Interview

Do some research on your potential employer prior to your interview. Read up on the latest news, developments and what issues may be affecting them. Knowing the company better will give you a chance to tailor your strengths and experience to their current and future needs. This will also enable you to answer their questions more intelligently, such as questions asking you why you would want to work in their company, or what you can offer them as an employee.

Job Search Haste Makes Waste — Of Your Time And Effort

As a resume writer, I often speak with clients who are burned out at work because they do it all and feel underpaid and under appreciated. They are tired, angry and confused about what their options are and remain in their prison-like situation for several years feeling stuck and powerless.

Then it happens. They have one of those days where they have just about had it! They grab the classified ads to find job listings that appeal to them and realize they need a resume in order to be considered. They look in their local yellow pages and search online to find a resume service, wondering only what the price is for a general resume.

To their surprise, they learn a resume must have a focus in order to generate results. That is the last thing they need to hear. They are confused enough and anxious about getting out of their situation as quickly as possible. They certainly do not need the added stress of figuring out what they want to do and spend more time in their dreaded position!

When asked by a resume writer how they plan to find their next job, they briefly consider a few possibilities. Inevitably, the game plan is always the same – to put it online at the popular job boards and hope to hear from companies for interviews.

The pitfalls of this approach does not worry them because they have not decided what they want to do. In their mind they are completely okay with someone else making the decision for them. They are under the impression that they will hear what the offers are and pick and choose to their liking. They also think it can’t hurt to go on the interviews to hear what the offers are.

What they do not realize is that they are placing themselves in a job search scenario that will most likely result in jumping around from job to job until they find what they are looking for. In the interim, they will miss out on great opportunities because they failed to target the right company and type of position they are well qualified for or qualified to transition to.

Furthermore, they will not get paid adequately for a job they do not have the right skills for, or worse, are over-qualified for. They are making a mistake by not making an effort to research various occupations to learn how marketable. Without this step, they will not know how much leverage they have in the marketplace and the salary they can command.

They are leaving the salary decision to a company or recruiter looking for anyone to fill the position. Keep in mind, a hiring company needs to know what your salary expectations are. If you come in too low, you can risk disqualifying yourself because they expect you to be at a certain level or you may be taken advantage of.

Limiting your job search to the job boards limits your opportunities and increases the likelihood that you will hear from agencies offering insurance sales and commission-only sales jobs. Yes, you may get lucky. But should your job search be handled like the roll of the dice?

Prepare Before The Interview

Researching the company is important. During The Interview

Some companies will want you to fill out an application. Don’t attach a resume if it is not specifically asked for.

Greet the interviewer with a smile and a firm handshake. Don’t address the interviewer by his/her first name unless you have a special reason or have been given permission. Don’t rush to take a seat until you are offered one.

Be gentle and polite. At this point, you should understand what they are looking for in a candidate. Make it clear that you have “it”. A little confidence goes a long way.

Some interviewers will ask you to ask questions or will let you speak about topics that they haven’t covered. Use this opportunity and make the most of it. Talk about relevant industry news or something that you know about the company. This is also the time to tell them about your past achievements and future goals. However, don’t forget that you have to organize your thoughts get your point across clearly. Thank the interviewer before leaving, reiterate your interest in the job, and ask when you can expect to hear from them again.

Some employers have recently adopted six sigma methodologies for their recruitment process. The tools of implementation have reduced the risk of ignoring the right candidate by “special cause” or accidentally during resume reviews. By taking this into account, you can be secure in the knowledge that your skills need not fit exactly, and that it is indeed possible for you to land your perfect job!
